The lecture was a fascinating discussion centered on the topic of Jewish conversion and the modern state of Israel, and the changing nature of Judaism: the new dissonance between Jewish “status” (legal, objective and political) and Jewish “identity” (the individual, feelings, and regard). A robust question and answer session followed, with several follow-up questions regarding how “Jewishness” can be established – particularly with regards to marriage in Israel.  Rabbi Ellenson’s talk was prefaced by an introduction from Eric Meyers, Bernice and Morton Lerner Professor of Judaic Studies, who introduced the Jewish Studies program at Duke; and Laura Lieber, Associate Professor of Religion, and former student of Rabbi Ellenson.

The lecture portion of the evening was capped by a gala reception, including performances by the Duke Youth Orchestra String Quartet, and a viewing of the exhibit currently at the Nasher Museum: “Collecting Matisse and Modern Masters: The Cone Sisters of Baltimore.”

The Rudnick lecture and the 40th Anniversary gala were sponored by the Duke Center for Jewish Studies, the Office of Global Strategy and Programs, and the Rudnick Endowment.
